Grill Your Own Hot Dog Play Set – Another Free Pattern for Your Summer BBQ!

Crochet a Hot Dog Set for your BBQ Grill (Free Pattern!)

If your pretend cookout needs one more classic favorite, this free crochet hot dog pattern is ready for the backyard BBQ. This pattern was designed to pair with my Big BBQ Grill Pattern and the free Burger Play Set, so you can keep building your crochet cookout one squishy food at a time. 

What You’ll Make

This crochet hot dog includes the classic pieces you need for a pretend backyard BBQ. I kept it simple but feel free to add any details you want!

Here’s what’s included in this free pattern:

  • Hot Dog Bun
  • Hot Dog
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard

The finished hot dog is perfect for pairing with the Big BBQ Grill. Use the same yarn and hook size as your grill for a matching play set!

Free Crochet Pattern – Hot Dog Play Set

Materials Needed

  • Bulky (5) yarn – I used Knotty Ball by Kayla’s Krafts in Naked (22 g/26 yrds), Almond (9 g/11 yrds), Cinnamon (8 g/10 yrds), Tomato (15 g/18 yrds, and Lemon (15 g/18 yrds) This is the same yarn I used for the BBQ Grill Pattern
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Scissors

This pattern is a great stash buster and makes a fun companion piece for the Big BBQ Grill Pattern and the free Burger Play Set.

Hot Dog Bun (Make two)

Start in Naked

R1: ch 10, inc in second ch from hook, sc in next 7chs, 4sc in last ch; work on opposite side of ch, 7sc, inc in last ch (24)

R2: [inc] 2 times, 7sc, [inc] 4 times, 7sc, [inc] 2 times (32)

R3: [1sc, inc] 2 times, 7sc, [1sc, inc] 4 times, 7sc, [1sc, inc] 2 times (40)

R4–5: (2 rounds) sc in each st around (40)

PM in stitch 4 on first bun and stitch 37 on second bun of R5

Switch to Almond

R6: BLO sc in each st around (40)

R7: [1sc, dec] 2 times, 8sc, [1sc, dec] 4 times, 8sc, [1sc, dec] 2 times (32)

R8: [dec] 2 times, 8sc, [dec] 4 times, 8sc, [dec] 2 times (24)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in/30 cm tail. Stuff lightly. Using tapestry needle and tail, close opening with a whip stitch. 

Place buns side by side, lining up the marked stitches. Using tapestry needle and Naked yarn, start in marked stitches and whip stitch across 12 corresponding stitches from R6 to attach buns. Hide tails in work. 

Hot dog 

In Cinnamon

R1: In a Magic Ring, 8sc (8)

R2–16: (15 rounds) sc in each st around (8)

Stuff firmly. Fasten off, leaving an 8 in/20 cm tail. Using tapestry needle and tail, weave tail in the front loop of each remaining stitch, pull tight to close. Hide remaining tail in work. With black yarn and tapestry needle, embroider grill lines on top of hot dog. Place Hot Dog in Bun!

Ketchup & Mustard Bottle (Make two)

One in Tomato & one in Lemon

R1: In a Magic Ring, 6sc (6)

R2: [inc] 6 times (12)

R3: [1sc, inc] 6 times (18)

R4: BLO sc in each st around (18)

R5–6: (2 rounds) sc in each st around (18)

R7: 2sc, dec, [4sc, dec] 2 times, 2sc (15)

R8–10: (3 rounds) sc in each st around (15)

R11: [3sc, dec] 3 times (12)

R12: sc in each st around (12)

In the next round, work all stitches into the FLO.

R13: [3sc, inc] 3 times (15)

R14: [3sc, dec] 3 times (12)

Fold down R13–14 to reveal the remaining BLO from R12. In the next round, work each stitch with the corresponding remaining BLO from R12 to shape the cap of the bottle.

R15: sc in each st around (12)

Stuff firmly. 

R16: [dec] 6 times (6)

In the next round, work all stitches into the FLO.

R17: 2sc, dec, 2sc (5)

R18: 3sc, dec (4)

Fasten off, leaving an 8 in/20 cm tail. Using tapestry needle and tail, weave tail in the front loop of each remaining stitch, pull tight to close. Hide remaining tail in work.
